Before anyone could come up with anything constructive to say, Ember’s phone rang again. She answered quickly when she saw it was Smothers.

“What have you got?” she snapped.

“I’m going to interview Nathan. I’m headed to yours right now, I assume you want to come along?”

“I sure do. Let’s go!”

“Oh, and Ember…”

“Yes?”

“Tell Cedric not to leave the house.”

“Understood,” she said, softly.

She relayed the information to Cedric. He was eager for her to go, and he knew that he couldn’t leave the house, of course. It was only a matter of time before his old pals from the force came to take him away. Ember kissed him deeply before she left, trying to stay calm. She hurried up the stairs to give Cid a hug before she left.

He was playing a video game, obviously innocent as yet to the new evidence. She couldn’t bear to tell him, so she just hurried out to meet Smothers with Kali tucked under one arm.

They drove to Nathan’s, both of them tossing ideas back and forth but only going around in circles. Both of them wanted to prove Cedric innocent, but there simply wasn’t any evidence.

Not yet, she thought, as they pulled up at Nathan’s

Kali leapt from the car and stalked up the drive, her tail swishing. Ember knew that the little cat was more than ready to put on her ‘bad cop’ routine.

To Ember’s surprise, the door swung open as they approached. Nathan stood in the doorway, his phone to his ear. He held out the other hand in front of him with one finger up.

“Yes. Of course. They are here now. No problem. Thank you.”

“Nathan,” Smothers began. “We’re here to—”

“It doesn’t matter why you’re here,” Nathan said, sharply. “My lawyer says I can’t talk to you. I’m afraid I can’t answer your questions.”

“We’ll be taking you to the station,” Smothers said, firmly. “And you’ll answer any questions we have down there. In cuffs if you don’t cooperate.”

“Go ahead,” Nathan said, holding out his wrists. “What are you going to book me with? My lawyer is on his way to the station right now. It won’t look good if you’re dragging me in on false charges.”

“You’re hampering a police investigation right now,” Ember said, her voice hard. “Cuff him, Smothers.”

Nathan smiled. “I’m not. I have every right to a lawyer. You’re striding straight into a grey area here, Ember, and it’s getting pretty murky. You might want to get out of the deep end.”

“Are you getting in the car or not?” Kali hissed. “I’m not an officer, I can say anything I please!”

“Yes,” Nathan said, nodding at the cat. “I’m getting in the car.”

He locked the door as he put his phone in his pocket, heading for the police car. Smothers and Ember hurried after him, driving Nathan to the station without talking. Ember was angry but also curious. He had lawyered up awfully fast, and how did he know they were going to question him? The sense of something not adding up was getting worse, like columns of numbers disappearing from an equation.
