Before anyone could come up with anything constructive to say, Emberâs phone rang again. She answered quickly when she saw it was Smothers.
âWhat have you got?â she snapped.
âIâm going to interview Nathan. Iâm headed to yours right now, I assume you want to come along?â
âI sure do. Letâs go!â
âOh, and Emberâ¦â
âYes?â
âTell Cedric not to leave the house.â
âUnderstood,â she said, softly.
She relayed the information to Cedric. He was eager for her to go, and he knew that he couldnât leave the house, of course. It was only a matter of time before his old pals from the force came to take him away. Ember kissed him deeply before she left, trying to stay calm. She hurried up the stairs to give Cid a hug before she left.
He was playing a video game, obviously innocent as yet to the new evidence. She couldnât bear to tell him, so she just hurried out to meet Smothers with Kali tucked under one arm.
They drove to Nathanâs, both of them tossing ideas back and forth but only going around in circles. Both of them wanted to prove Cedric innocent, but there simply wasnât any evidence.
Not yet, she thought, as they pulled up at Nathanâs
Kali leapt from the car and stalked up the drive, her tail swishing. Ember knew that the little cat was more than ready to put on her âbad copâ routine.
To Emberâs surprise, the door swung open as they approached. Nathan stood in the doorway, his phone to his ear. He held out the other hand in front of him with one finger up.
âYes. Of course. They are here now. No problem. Thank you.â
âNathan,â Smothers began. âWeâre here toââ
âIt doesnât matter why youâre here,â Nathan said, sharply. âMy lawyer says I canât talk to you. Iâm afraid I canât answer your questions.â
âWeâll be taking you to the station,â Smothers said, firmly. âAnd youâll answer any questions we have down there. In cuffs if you donât cooperate.â
âGo ahead,â Nathan said, holding out his wrists. âWhat are you going to book me with? My lawyer is on his way to the station right now. It wonât look good if youâre dragging me in on false charges.â
âYouâre hampering a police investigation right now,â Ember said, her voice hard. âCuff him, Smothers.â
Nathan smiled. âIâm not. I have every right to a lawyer. Youâre striding straight into a grey area here, Ember, and itâs getting pretty murky. You might want to get out of the deep end.â
âAre you getting in the car or not?â Kali hissed. âIâm not an officer, I can say anything I please!â
âYes,â Nathan said, nodding at the cat. âIâm getting in the car.â
He locked the door as he put his phone in his pocket, heading for the police car. Smothers and Ember hurried after him, driving Nathan to the station without talking. Ember was angry but also curious. He had lawyered up awfully fast, and how did he know they were going to question him? The sense of something not adding up was getting worse, like columns of numbers disappearing from an equation.
